News

The latest breaking society news fresh from Fleet Street..

September 2022 marks a bit of a change in the ADSUK committee with the departure of Paul Stewart. Paul is a founder member and has taken up many responsibilities during that time – from building up our social media profiles to Chair and all round star of the society. He will be much missed!

Kate Garner, fabulous host and events coordinator will also be leaving at the end of our autumn events season.  But what a season Kate has organised – three amazing events all on the topic of ceramics.

We welcome Lorna McCulloch who is taking the role of regional reps coordinator and Lucy Jane Santos will take over the role of Chair. If you would like to be part of the ADSUK committee please contact hello@artdecosociety.uk for more information.

World Art Deco Day

The very first World Art Deco Day is almost upon us! Co-ordinated by The International Coalition of Art Deco Societies, April will see a host of online events take place across the globe, culminating in Art Deco Day on April 28th.

Here at ADSUK we will be hosting a Zoom party for members to update you on our progress as a society, share news about upcoming projects and the preservation of Art Deco in the UK. The team from Saltdean Lido will join us to share their efforts to preserve and restore this Art Deco icon. Lucy Jane Santos will also share her secret recipe for the Signature World Art Deco Day cocktail, and we’ll all be dancing along to performances by vintage vocalist extraordinaire Hattie Bee! Bring your dancing shoes and your passion for all things Art Deco — it’s sure to be a hoot!

Wednesday 28th April 19:30 (British Summer Time)

Forthcoming Talk the ‘Indestructible Lee Miller.’ January 23rd 2021 3PM GMT

with Antony Penrose

From an early age Lee Miller learned the chances life brought needed her skilful and courageous adaptation to make them work for her. Born 1907 in America, she morphed from a young artist to a top fashion model. In Paris she became a surrealist photographer also shooting fashion for American Vogue. Back in New York she had a highly successful studio but left to marry an Egyptian and become a photographer of that land. At the outbreak of WW2 she arrived in London, returning to fashion photography for Vogue and later became their war correspondent with the US Army in Europe. Her final career was as a surrealist gourmet cook in her last home, Farleys House in Sussex. Her life was filled with passion, heartbreak and high drama. Her secret in moving forward was to grab her chances with both hands. It made her indestructible in the sense that today her work is the subject of many books, TV documentaries, international exhibitions and in 2022 a feature film.

FREE TALK!

Our Yorkshire and Humber regional representative Kevin Trickett MBE will be giving a talk about Art Deco on Thursday evening, 16th January, starting at 7.30pm.

Entitled The Style, History and Influence of Art Deco, the illustrated talk will provide an introduction to the subject.

From architecture to art, furniture to fashion, and much more besides, Art Deco has been one of the most enduring styles of the modern age. Although coined only in the 1960s, the term ‘Art Deco’ describes one of the most important design movements of the 20th Century. Taking its inspirations from ancient Egypt and the primitive art forms of America and Africa, the innovative, streamlined and decorative elegance of Art Deco reached its zenith in the 1920s and 30s but continues to influence design today. Original items from the period are now highly collectable but manufacturers frequently incorporate elements of Art Deco style into their current ranges.

Kevin has long been fascinated by all things Art Deco and will share his insights into this fascinating and all-encompassing subject.

The talk, which is free to attend, has been arranged by Doncaster Civic Trust who have extended a welcome to members of Art Deco Society UK but to ensure that capacity meets demand, any of our members wishing to attend who are not also members of Doncaster Civic Trust are asked to book places by emailing Kevin on kevintrickett@msn.com

The talk will be given in The Eastfield Restaurant at Doncaster School for the Deaf, Leger Way, Doncaster, DN2 6AY. The venue is to the rear of the site above the Warde-Aldam Centre (sports hall). There is a lift and plenty of free parking. The talk will last approximately 50 minutes to an hour.
